St Austell vs. St Minver 1st XI – 9 August 2014
Match Result: St Austell won by 50 runs.
St Minver failed to chase down St Austell’s 253-3 this weekend meaning they were able to pick up just 6 points in the Division 2 East table.
Despite a relatively tight first few overs, St Minver failed to take a wicket until the 23rd over of the innings where a strong opening partnership of 107 gave St Austell a great start to the game. Rob Hawken was the bowler who got the breakthrough, however the other St Austell opener James Carter managed to continue strongly reaching 118 before being bowled by Jake Grubb. A strong last few overs for the batting side meant St Austell finished on 253 for the loss of just 3 wickets, a score that meant St Minver were still in with an outside chance after restricting the total quite well given the start to the innings.
St Minver’s innings began well with a strong partnership between openers Ben Hawken and Warwick Abrahim. However the pair both fell in quick succession with 74 runs on the board with Warwick out LBW for 47 and Ben being bowled shortly after for 27. Any real chance of the win soon fell with the run rate falling after the wickets. However, Craig Allen played a great innings in scoring 62 including 8 fours and 2 sixes, and support from Rob Hawken (26) meant St Minver still had the chance to reach maximum batting points. This was achieved after 18* from Jack Barton and a sensational six from Antony Ash off the final ball of the innings.
Steve and Vicky Grubb’s man of the match = Craig Allen
